“Side hustle” is a phrase that seems to be on everyone’s radar lately. With a significant amount of thought-leaders speaking about multi-passionate job seekers, a “side hustle” is the perfect way to supplement your income and gain experience like soft skills. But how?


If you’ve never freelanced before, don’t worry because 24 Seven can lend a helping hand. If you’re currently a freelancer, kudos to you. You have the job millions of Millennials are seeking!

Even if you love your current job as an art director, you may also be passionate about copywriting. Freelancing would be a smart starting point to marry your two passions.

Start a blog

As mentioned above, a blog is a great segway into creating a side hustle because it acts as a portfolio that hiring managers look for.  In fact, my personal blog played a huge part in getting a job at 24 Seven, which couldn’t have worked out better because I’m able to take the soft skills I acquired from blogging and use them for my current marketing role.

A blog is also a great way to network with people in similar communities. And every company loves a good networker. You may even be approached to be a brand ambassador for a company in which case you could get paid (see our brand ambassador openings here).

Affiliate links

After you’ve established a blog, you can start to add in affiliate links. Almost every website you go on to today is filled with affiliate links. Affiliate links are links to a company that a third party has partnered with. This third party website gets paid per click or per purchase when a visitor has clicked that unique link at no additional charge to the visitor. It can be confusing at first but once you get the hang of it, you’ll notice $20 here, $10 there really adds up. For any easy to use affiliate link provider, check out Amazon.

A Morning Routine All Successful People Follow

An effective morning routine is an integral part of setting the tone for your entire day. One false move and your day is a domino effect of seemingly “bad luck”. However, with a positive start to your day, you are more likely to attract more positive experiences and success into your life.

One thing we don’t want to hear is how you “don’t have time”. If you have time to go on Instagram and stay in bed for an extra 10 minutes, you have time to set yourself up for success.


For some people sitting in silence for 5-10 minutes while manifesting a successful day may seem far-fetched, but it’s proven to work! 24 Seven offers mid-day meditation breaks which gives our brain a recharge and motivates us for the second half of the day.

Studies have shown that meditation improves concentration, memory, and happiness. Founder and CEO of The Huffington Post, Arianna Huffington, meditates and expresses her gratitude before checking her phone. How many of us can say that? No wonder she was able to write a New York Times Bestseller.


It’s no secret exercise makes us feel better by releasing endorphins and increases our immunity, but did you also know it’s linked to success?

According to a study conducted by HBR, “On days when employees visited the gym, their experience at work changed. They reported managing their time more effectively, being more productive, and having smoother interactions with their colleagues”. Fashion and business moguls Anna Wintour, Isabel Mirant, and Katherine Power also exercise first thing in the morning. If that isn’t reason enough to strap on your sneakers, I don’t know what is!

Eat breakfast

You’ve all heard that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” and I hate to sound like your mother, but it’s true.  Breakfast is part of a morning routine all successful people follow since it fuels their bodies for the day ahead. Eating breakfast eliminates the temptation to make unhealthy decisions and snack on junk food.

Breakfast also allows you to be more productive in the morning since that’s when your motivation is at its peak. Justin Timberlake, Richard Branson, and Mark Zuckerberg are just a few insanely successful people who eat breakfast.


… anything but what’s on your phone. Why? If you open a disappointing email or read sad news on Facebook how is that going to affect your day? Probably not positively.

Oprah reads an inspiring book for 20 minutes every morning. I’ve adopted this habit and I read on the subway during my morning commute. Not only does it help me avoid awkward eye contact with strangers, but it’s productive. If billionaire Oprah is reading every day you bet your bottom dollar I’m going to read, too!

Too Much Tech? We’ll Let You Be the Judge

Tech etiquette in the workplace is a fine line that you should cross with caution. Yes, the world of pen and paper is slowly dissipating, but that doesn’t mean you should totally toss the notepad for an iPad just yet…

So when is it acceptable to touch your tech?

Assess your company’s culture

If you’re working at a start-up, it may be impossible to do your job without your phone. Jobs like a Social Media Strategist or Content Developer require a high rate of digital engagement. However if you’re working in a more traditional setting, a pen and paper will suffice. Even though typical note taking is changing, not all employers have fully accepted this evolution, so it’s better to be safe than #sorrynotsorry.

Announce what you’re doing

If you have to use your mobile device during a meeting, work event, or company outing, be sure to announce what you’re doing first. It may sound silly but using your phone to record work-related information is not quite common, and your boss may be wondering why you’re allegedly texting during an important meeting. Simply ask beforehand if it’s ok or give a heads up that you forgot your notepad so you’ll be using your phone to take notes or record the conversation.

Before work, during lunch, and after work is prime tech time

Text and social media away at designated times and you won’t have to worry about being inappropriate in the workplace. As soon as you step foot in that office, put the iPhone away unless instructed otherwise. Trust me, the last thing you want is to give your boss the wrong impression.

Even though companies are adopting the fact that technology enables more productivity, make sure it’s appropriate at the time of execution.

Looking to Start a Side Gig? These States Have the Cheapest Cost of Living

After years of searching, you’ve finally discovered your passion and now you want to have your side gig take flight. Then you realize you live in the most expensive state in the country now what?

Well, two things can happen: you put your passion on the back burner… again, or you start your new side gig in a state with the cheapest cost of living. Starting a second business in a state where the cost of living is cheap is a smart and relatively safe financial career move.

As you can imagine Silicon Valley and New York City did not make the list but that’s not to say you won’t end up there. I started my side gig in South Jersey and eventually made it to the Big Apple through persistence and determination.

Sometimes you have to play small to win big.

And these 5 states are anything but small…

#5 Georgia

Not surprisingly states located in the mid-west seem to have the cheapest cost of living. Georgia ranks #5 on the list with an average home costing roughly $144,000. If you’re a freelancer or looking to relocate, Georgia is a viable option for you.

#4 Colorado

With Colorado’s economy on the rise, their employment is thriving and cost of living is cheap. The average rent in Colorado for a one-bedroom apartment is $779. Think of how much “play money” you’d have leftover on a $40,000 salary.

#3 Utah

I consider Utah an under-the-radar-state. You know it’s there, but you never hear much about Utah, which I’m sure is appreciated by the people who live there. According to Zillow, in Salt Lake City you can buy a 1-bedroom, 1-bath apartment for $129,000. In New York City a 1-bedroom apartment would be $1.2 million.

#2 Texas

As I mentioned in this post there are certain states that don’t carry income tax which is where you’ll find successful millionaires residing. In 2015, Texas ranked as #2 cheapest cost of living with no state income tax. An average house in Houston is around $230,000. In New York City you can maybe buy a room for that much.

#1 Minnesota

Bordering one of the Great Lakes and in close proximity to beautiful Canada, Minnesota is the #1 state with the cheapest cost of living. You’re about halfway between the coasts, which makes for reasonable travel. An average home in Minnesota costs around $173,000. Plus, the unemployment rate is 3.7% which is much lower than the national average of 5%. Are you convinced yet?

To Wear or Not To Wear? From Campus to Corporate…

what to wear to workWhether you want to believe it or not how you look matters, especially at your new job. And we’re not the only ones who think so…

According to Jonathan Alpert for the Huffington Post, “When all else is equal, the person who is better dressed will get the job or land the promotion”. This doesn’t mean you have to be dressed to the nines at all times, just when it matters most. So when exactly is that?

It is recommended you wear your “Sunday best” during interviews, meetings, and out of office events (depending on the event of course). These are the times you’ll see the most people so you want to give your best impression.

Deciding what to wear

A good indicator on deciding what to wear for your new job comes from the people around you. How is everyone in the office dressed? When I first started working at 24 Seven, one of my coworkers told me “…think J Crew”. And there you have it, simple as that.

Another idea is to become familiar with the culture and handbook if your company offers one. Are you working at a start-up or in a corporate environment? Start-ups tend to be more casual with jeans, T-shirts, and even sneakers; whereas in a more corporate setting, the tone tends to be “business casual”. Speaking of…

What is business casual?

Something many of us are afraid to admit is that we have no idea what business casual is! The whole button-up, black slacks, and dress shoes don’t cut it. We need a more defined explanation.

Since just starting to work in a business casual environment myself, I have one word for you: Zara. J Crew, Banana Republic, and Express will suffice too, but I like the edge and affordability of Zara’s options offer, plus their pants are ridiculously comfortable.

Business casual entails things that are too dressy to wear outside of work but not dressy enough to wear to a formal outing such as a gala or black tie event. Jeans, T-shirts, and sneakers are not acceptable here but black pants, silk blouses, and pointy toe mules are.

When all else fails, overdress. It’s better to be overdressed than under-dressed.
